Very Important Questions

Tue Mar 18, 2008, 8:36 AM
Why are dollar bills rectangular, and not sqare? Or even triangular or circular? Who decided on that?

Why is it that British singers lose thier accent (to me, an American) when they sing, but country singers don't?

How can your nose get all stuffed up, but be runny at the same time?

And The Big One. Synesthesia, or not? How else can I explain why "Numb" by Linkin Park is dark red, or why "Ayo Technology" by Justin Timberlake ft. 50 Cent is a dark blue with texture like corduroy pants, or "Breaking the Habit" by Linkin Park is darkdark green with a void-ish feel to it? Or why the word "hebrew" is a large, flat, red stone-clay slab sliding (grinding) over a hole in the ground and finally coming to a (booming) halt? Or why twelve is light blue, or seventeen is a deep maroon, or fourteen a nice dark purple?

I don't think I have it.
My symptoms (is that what you'd call it?) aren't 'traditional'.

Synesthetic images are spatially extended, meaning they often have a definite 'location'. No. They're conjured up in my subconscious; I notice them gradually and have no space. Some describe thier synesthetic images like, "A blue dot, about three feet away, hanging in the air." Mine is in my mind. Sometimes I can sense space, as in the case of "Breaking the Habit", but it's not as if I'm in the color or it's around anything.

Synesthesia is involuntary and automatic. Yes. It happens by itself; I don't think about it consciously.

Synesthetic percepts are consistent and generic (i.e. simple rather than imagistic). Yes. There are no 'scenes' or definite shapes (unless I consciously ignore the color and make up a video in my mind), just vague forms and colors.

Synesthesia is highly memorable. I'm not sure what this means. I think it's referring to a habit where, instead of remembering the name (or song), I remeber the color. I'm not sure of this.

Synesthesia is laden with affect. I'm not sure what this means, either. "Affect, like the adjective affective, refers to the experience of feeling or emotion." If that's what it means, then I suppose. I like the calm blue of "My Immortal" by Evanescence, and the crimson-red of the song "Damn Girl" by Justin Timberlake complements it very nicely, 'setting the "right" mood'.

In addition to being involuntary, this additional perception is regarded by the synesthete as real, often outside the body, instead of imagined in the mind's eye. No. As mentioned before, they're in my mind.

I don't know why this happens. I can't even sense a real pattern. I don't notice it in most words or numbers, but in almost all music. Usually hard, heavy rock songs are darker than others, and songs with acoustic guitars usually are orange or yellow. Almost none are grey; I've only noticed two and one of them I hate. Sometimes there are textures, sometimes (most times) there aren't.

Even some fanfics give off a vibe, and when I used to prowl the nick.com message boards, they gave off a different feel (that was before I was conscious of the colors, but I did sense something.) I'd associate the typical season one Zuko-Kidnaps-Katara-As-Bait with dark red, but they weren't the only ones that could be that color.

There are other 'vibes' too-- this could fit in to the ';personalities' type synesthesia, although it could be something completely different. It even happens here on dA. Like some user pages should be bottom left and are sort of empty-ish, even if they have a fair amount of pageviews and deviations. Or some could feel crowded and centered, even though they might not in actuality. Others could be comfortably busy, or peacefully calm. And nothing ever happens to warrent those perceptions. They just happen. It's so weird.

I also noticed it's easier to draw when listening to music if I work around the song's color scheme-- like the dark blues of "Bring Me To Life", or the greyish green of "I Hate Everything About You". There's even this one feeling that has a color!

So do I, or don't I? Or am I just crazy? I actually wouldn't care if I were; I like the colors. But it'd be nice to know, y'know?

Yeah, I do. :]
I think that's another reason why I like music so much--because of the colors.
